Today at 4:02AM The (not) Daily Quote- May 9th, 2008
Since I suggested people watch an episode of Anthony Bourdain's old show A Cook's Tour, I figured a quote I like from one of his books might be appropriate.
Vegetarians, and their Hezbollah-like splinter faction, the vegans, are a persistent irritant to any chef worth a damn. To me, life without veal stock, pork fat, sausage, organ meat, demi-glace, or even stinky cheese is a life not worth living. Vegetarians are the enemy of everything good and decent in the human spirit, and an affront to all I stand for, the pure enjoyment of food. The body, these waterheads imagine, is a temple that should not be polluted by animal protein. It's healthier, they insist, though every vegetarian waiter I've worked with is brought down by any rumor of a cold. Oh, I'll accommodate them, I'll rummage around for something to feed them, for a 'vegetarian plate', if called on to do so. Fourteen dollars for a few slices of grilled eggplant and zucchini suits my food cost fine.
-Anthony Bourdain (from his memoir, Kitchen Confidential)

Today at 3:45AM Cook's Tour- Japanese Culture and Food
Just thought I'd point this out for people who are interested in Japanese culture and food.
This Sunday (May 11th), at 3:30pm on Food Network they are repeating the 'Dinner with Geishas' episode of A Cook's Tour.
It is an excellent episode that shows different things from Japan from a great perspective, and I highly recommend everyone watch it.
You get some perspective of classical Japanese food at an onsen, some ever so fun vending machine food, and fugu/blowfish.
I really do recommend you guys watch it if you can.

Digimon Best of the Best Ended
After a few weeks, which seemed more like an eternity at times, the Main Digimon Best of the Best has now come to an end.
I must say i've enjoyed running it and found that some of the WtW members are insane with some of the choices! :)
The final list of results can be found Here
I may run the odd smaller one from time to time depending how the wind blows and all that.
Thanks to everyone who participated and i hope you had as much fun as i did ^^ See even i can be laid back at times.

The (not) Daily Quote- April 25th, 2008
'Mikey calls home'
Mikey's Mom: Hi, you've reached the Simon residence. If your message is for Ms. Simon, press 1.
Mikey's Dad: And if it's for me, Mr. Simon, press 2.
Mikey's Mom: And if you're our only child in Japan and your calling cause you're all alone in a big empty room and you miss the comforting sound of another human voice, stay on the line as we read from a list of words chosen at random from the dictionary.
Mikey's Dad: Vernacular
Mikey's Mom: Flibbertigibbet
Mikey's Dad: Mortgage
Mikey's Mom: Pedal
Mikey's Dad: Disenfranchise

Speed Racer: The Next Generation- Pilot Review/Info
(same post I made at aod, minus the intro being gone)
Got to see the first part of the premiere movie.
After watching it, my primary thought is.... it's fucking Harry Potter with cars.
There is a driving school with the greatest drivers in the world.
There are 'classes' like 'defensive driving' and 'offensive driving'.
The offensive driving teacher is a creepy guy with pasty skin and black hair who hates the main character.
The headmaster (Speed Racer's brother) likes the main character (new character named Speed, who is an orphan 'wink wink'.
Speed makes two friends his first day there, a talented female and a whacky slightly weird guy who is obsessed with Speed Racer (and wears a homemade Speed outfit and carries around a Speed doll).
The setup 'evil old guy' is a rich guy who walks around demanding his giant assistant give him nachos (reminds me of Leonardo Leonardo and Mr. Plug).
The characters are, by large, just cliche, but a few interesting things to note
Speed- has a magical key around his neck, and a 'replica' of Speed Racer's bandana (neckerchief, I can't recall what the stupid thing was called) as the only two things his father left him, was orphaned.
X- The star student at Hogwar...err, the racing academy. The son of Speed Racer. Everyone knows him and everyone loves him. (interesting sort of switch, having everyone know who X is, but no one really knowing who Speed is). And yes, it's X, not Racer X.
Spritle- Speed's little brother is in charge of the academy, and voiced by Speed's original actor.
Speed Racer- No one knows, vanished years ago.
Chim-Chim- A robot monkey apparently completely unrelated to the original Chim-Chim built by Speed's new roommate.
Those are the only character's that really jump out to you at all (minus the dude demanding nachos, just cause it was really odd and random). Other characters show up, screaming noob at Speed, but nothing overtly interesting at all.
The Mach 5 was junked years ago, Spritle allows Speed into a junkyard to get a car since he doesn't have one and feels a connection to him/likes what he saw when Speed drove a junker in a race. The key flashes and makes a hologram map all over the junkyard and when him and his friends follow it they find...a part of the Mach 5 and the episode ends.
Animation is really horrible, racing is boring honestly (a few moments of coolness, and I generally like the car designs). The plot is...eh, it isn't good, but I suppose it could be worse. It wasn't horrible enough that I won't say I won't watch more. The themesong is a new version of the old themesong, but was very generic sounding.
A few easter eggs that jumped out at me...
Pictures of characters from the old series are screencaps and designs ripped straight from the old Speed Racer, despite the difference in styles between the series.
The statue of Speed Racer at the academy is CGI shaped like Speed and the Mach 5 in the freeze frame turn shot.
If it had better animation, despite major flaws in writing, I probably would have enjoyed it quite a bit more, so....Go Speed Racer Go...I guess...
